In 1950s Paris, a young American named David becomes entangled in a love affair with Giovanni, a bartender, while his fiancée Hella is away. Their relationship unfolds in the secrecy of Giovanni's darkened room, but Hella's return brings a crisis that leads to tragedy. David's inner turmoil and the ensuing events explore the complexities of love, desire and morality in James Baldwin's poignant and haunting narrative.
