The film, which explores the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States, is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was adopted in 1865 to abolish slavery in the United States and end involuntary servitude except as a punishment for conviction of a crime.
Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards and winner of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.
