Yellowface by R. F. Kuang

June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena became a cross-genre literary darling, while June's book didn't even get a paperback release. June thinks nobody wants stories about basic white girls. When she witnesses Athena's death in a freak accident, she steals Athena's finished novel about Chinese laborers in WWI. June edits and submits it as her own, rebranding herself as Juniper Song with an ambiguously ethnic author photo. The novel becomes a bestseller, but June can't escape Athena's shadow, and emerging evidence threatens to expose her. As she fights to protect her secret, she learns how far she'll go to keep what she thinks she deserves.
