General David Petraeus and historian Andrew Roberts will discuss their book, Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine, a sweeping history of the evolution of warfare leading up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and a penetrating analysis of what we must learn from the past and anticipate in the future to navigate an increasingly perilous world. The discussion is part of the ongoing Civility in America Series.

The event will be moderated by Gerard Baker, Editor at Large, The Wall Street Journal.

General David Petraeus is a retired United States Army general who is widely respected as a leading warrior intellectual. He served for 37 years in the U.S. Army, culminating his time in uniform with six consecutive commands as a general officer, five of which were in combat, including Command of the Surge in Iraq, U.S. Central Command, and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. He then served as Director of the CIA. He has held academic appointments at six universities and currently is a Senior Fellow and Lecturer at Yale University. He is a prominent commentator on contemporary security issues, military developments and global affairs. He graduated with distinction from the U.S. Military Academy and earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Andrew Roberts has written 18 books that have been translated into 28 languages and won 13 literary prizes. These include Salisbury: Victorian Titan, Masters and Commanders, The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War, Napoleon, Churchill: Walking with Destiny and George III: The Life and Reign of Britain’s Most Misunderstood Monarch. Lord Roberts is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Historical Society; the Roger & Martha Mertz Visiting Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford; the Lehrman Institute Distinguished Lecturer at the New-York Historical Society; and a visiting professor at the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London. He also sits in the House of Lords as Baron Roberts of Belgravia.
