Synergy1Holdings, in collaboration with Alliance for Black Achievement and the City of Stamford, will present a free screening of the documentary The Right to Read: The Greatest Civil Right Issue of Our Time, at the Avon Theatre May 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. The film, from executive producer Levar Burton and director Jenny Mackenzie, sheds light on the current illiteracy crisis in America. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. Tickets are available here.
The discussion will cover the actionable steps that can be taken to address the illiteracy crisis, among other topics highlighted in the film. The panel will feature Dr. Tamu Lucero, Superintendent of Stamford Public Schools; Dr. Alexandra Estrella, Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools; Steven Hernandez, Executive Director for the Commission on Women, Children and Seniors; Michael A. Hyman, member of the Stamford Board of Education; and Allison Gushée Molkenthin, an executive producer of The Right to Read. Educator Charmaine Tourse-Davis will moderate the discussion.
