Inter Library Loan

Reserving Materials

If the library owns an item, but it is currently checked out, you can reserve the item by putting a a hold on it. Some new titles are in high demand and have long lists of patrons on hold. You can place holds in person, by telephone, or online. After notification, materials will be held for four days. To reserve items by placing a hold online click the blue box below.

ILL Reserve a Book

If the Main Library does not have the item you are looking for, you can place an interlibrary loan (ILL) with another library in the state. Both of these can be done online, in person at any of our branches or by phone.

To request an ILL online for books and periodicals click on the blue boxes below.

To request an ILL in person, please visit any of the Information Desks at the Main Library or Harry Bennett Branch.

To request an ILL by phone, for the Main Library please call 203-351-8221, -8222, -8231 or -8234. For the Harry Bennett Branch please call 203-351-8292. For the Weed Branch please call 203-351-8286.

To request an ILL you will need a valid library card and you must be a Stamford resident. It takes an average of 2 to 6 weeks to get a book or magazine article. It takes an average of 3 weeks to get census microfilm (consult Federal Population Census website or Ferguson Library 2nd Floor Reference Desk).

It is usually a free service, but you will be asked to set a fee limit should the lending library charge us. The due date is set by the lending library. Once notified of ILL material arrival, failure to pick up material will result in a $1 fine. Overdue fines are $0.25 per day. The replacement cost for a lost book is $25 or as set by the lending library.
