Getting and Renewing Your Library Card

For your convenience you can apply for a library card online. You will still need to come into the library to pick up and activate the card. Please see below for requirements.

To change any information on your card, come into any library location with proper identification. Please report any change of address.

Please report lost cards immediately. Replacement is $1 for adults and 50 cents for children and teens. You are responsible for all materials borrowed on your card.

Adults

You will need to bring one of these to get or renew a Ferguson Library Card:

  • Driver’s license with current address
  • Car registration with current address
  • Current receipt with address, i.e. rent, tax, utility bill (no emergency room bills)
  • Lease with current address
  • City of Stamford golf permit
  • State ID with current address (issued by the DMV, no PO Box # as primary address).
  • Connecticut residents who do not live in Stamford but wish to borrow materials from
    The Ferguson Library must have a hometown, unexpired library card, as well as current matching ID
  • Out of state residents, please ask for guidelines
  • Library cards are not transferable. Only the person whose name appears on the card may use it.

Children & Teens

What you need to bring to get or renew a Ferguson Library card:

  • High school students must show report card with current address or driver’s license.
  • Children must be able to write their own name and also must be present in the library when applying. Best if accompanied by parent or guardian.

The Ferguson’s Youth Services Department is committed to supporting local educators with information, materials, and special services. Ferguson Library Teacher Cards are issued on an annual basis to Stamford teachers, Stamford residents who teach elsewhere and home-schoolers up through grade 12. This courtesy is extended for materials which will be used in the classroom. Individuals who want a Teacher Card must submit proof each year that they teach in Stamford or are a Stamford resident employed in another district. Acceptable forms of proof include a school roster, pay stub or any official school identification. Apply at the Borrowers Services desk.

InterLibrary Loan

The Ferguson Library can order materials for you through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) if we do not own them. If the material is of a new and/or popular nature that fits into our collections, we will consider purchase.

Interlibrary Loan Info:

  • You need a valid library card
  • You must be a Stamford resident
  • It takes an average of 2 to 6 weeks to get a book or magazine article
  • It takes an average of 3 weeks to get census microfilm (consult Federal Population Census Internet site or our 2nd Floor Reference Desk)
  • It is usually a free service but you will be asked to set a fee limit should the lending library charge us
  • ILL requests can be placed at the Information Desks at the Main Library or Harry Bennett Branch.
  • ILL requests can also be taken over the phone by calling 203 351-8221, 8222,
    8231 or 8234 at Main, 203 351-8292 at Harry Bennettor 8286 at the Weed Branch.
  • You can also request ILL online. Books and Periodicals
  • Due date is set by the lending library.
  • For renewal, call 203 351-8237 at least four days prior to due date.
  • Once notified of ILL material arrival, failure to pick up material will result in a $1 fine.
  • Overdue fine is 25c a day.
  • Replacement cost for lost book is $25 or as set by the lending library.

Loan Periods

Book Loan Periods:  Most books may be borrowed for 3 weeks with 2 renewals.
Except:

  • Express Books – 7 days (These are additional copies of new books that are in very high demand. Sorry, but there are no reserves or renewals on Express Books.
  • New Books – 3 weeks. One renewal if there is no one waiting for the title.  No extended loan.

Audio Visual and Other Non-book Materials:

New Titles – Feature & Non-Feature DVDs**

  • No Limit
  •  Circulate for 4 days with one renewal if there is no one waiting
  • No extended loan

Regular Titles

Feature DVDs

  •    No Limit
  •    Circulate for 4 days with two renewals if there is no one waiting
  •   No extended loan

Non-feature DVDs

  •  No Limit
  •  Circulate for 7 days with two renewals if there is no one waiting
  •  No extended loan

Express DVDs

  •  Limited to 3 titles
  •  Circulate for 1 day
  • No renewals

Portable DVD Players (for studying English or citizenship)

  • Can be borrowed for 7 days
  • One renewal for 1 week
  • Online reserves not available

Museum Passes

  •  1 week
  •  No renewals

eReaders

  •   3 weeks
  •   1 renewal

Reserves

  • Reserves may be placed on any titles in DVD format except Express titles. Reserves at South End or the Bookmobile must be picked up at those locations.
  •  DVD reserves will be held at the Borrowers Services Desk for 4 days.

 **Non-feature DVDs include documentaries and TV series.
Note:  A 17-year-old who presents acceptable proof of age may borrow R-rated titles. 

Audiobooks & CDs

  • No limit
  • 3 weeks with 2 renewals if no holds waiting

Language Kits

  • One set per person for 3 weeks
  • Two renewals

Circulating Magazines

  • No limit
  • 1 week
  • No renewals

Learning Kits To Go

  • One kit for 3 weeks with two renewals

Please Note:

  • There are no renewals for items on request by other library users.
  • All materials may be returned to any Ferguson Library location, with these exceptions: Interlibrary Loan materials may not be returned to the South End Branch or Bookmobile; Learning Kits To Go must be returned to the Main Library.
  • Books, audiobooks and DVDs (except for Interlibrary Loan items) may be returned to any public library in Connecticut; however, you are responsible for the materials until they arrive back at the location where they were borrowed.

Using Your Library Card

Check due dates, see where you are on the waiting list, check any outstanding bills.  If you have any problems, please feel free to contact the Borrowers Services desk at 203-351-8261, 8262 or 8263.You can also review your account online. 2. Login with your Library card number and PIN

Your LOGIN is your LIBRARY CARD NUMBER (ex: 21118009695839).

Your PASSWORD is your PIN.

Don’t have a password/PIN?

If you don’t have a password yet? We can set one up for you the next time you’re in the library.

Forgot your password/PIN?

The PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a personal code assigned to every user in the system.  You can use your PIN to place a hold, renew materials, review your account or request a purchase.

If you forgot your password (PIN). you may request a new one online, provided you gave us an email address when you registered for your library card.

Renewing An Item

You can renew items in person at any of the library branches, by phone, or online.

To renew by phone please call 203-351-8268. For interlibrary loan renewals (at least 4 days in advance) please call 203-351-8237

To renew items online, click on the blue box below and follow these directions:

1. Log in with your library card number and PIN.

2. A list of items you currently have checked out will appear. Choose which ones you want to renew.

3. New due date will appear.

You may renew most items twice unless someone is waiting for it. New books may only be renewed once, and Express items are not renewable.

When you renew, please have your library card in front of you and the barcode of item(s) to be renewed.

Reserving Materials

If the library owns an item, but it is currently checked out, you can reserve the item by putting a a hold on it. Some new titles are in high demand and have long lists of patrons on hold. You can place holds in person, by telephone, or online. After notification, materials will be held for four days. To reserve items by placing a hold online click the blue box below.

Please Note:

  • There are no renewals for items on request by other library users.
  • All materials may be returned to any Ferguson Library location, with these exceptions: Interlibrary Loan materials may not be returned to the South End Branch or Bookmobile; Learning Kits To Go must be returned to the Main Library.
  • Books, audiobooks and DVDs (except for Interlibrary Loan items) may be returned to any public library in Connecticut; however, you are responsible for the materials until they arrive back at the location where they were borrowed.

Self-Pick Up Reserves

Main Library and Harry Bennett Branch

Reserved materials, except InterLibrary loan, are available for self pick-up. They are filed alphabetically by a combination of your last name and your library card number, as follows:

LAST NAME (first 4 letters)
LIBRARY CARD # (last 4 digits)

For example, material for John Smith with a card# of 21118001234567 will be filed under SMIT4567. Please check out your reserved materials at the Borrowers Services Desk or self check-out stations.
