About the Stamford Literary Competition

The Stamford Literary Competition recognizes excellence in student writing.

Students in grades 3 – 12 who live in Stamford or attend school here, are invited to submit original works of fiction, non-fiction or poetry, with a maximum length of 1500 words. All entries must be typed, single spaced, with a 12 point font.

This is an annual event with a reception honoring the winners in each category and grade. Thank you to all participants and teachers who make this contest such a success year after year.

Books for Babies

This program, which has become a model for other Friends groups nationwide, provides a free first book to every baby born at Stamford Hospital.

Books for Babies was launched in 1986. It was such an innovative idea that the National Friends Association adopted it, and made it available to Friends groups throughout the United States.

The mother of every new baby born at Stamford Hospital is given the book, “Read to Your Bunny”, and a brochure that includes suggested reading and information about Ferguson Library storytime programs.

Every two months, volunteers prepare the packages and deliver them to Stamford Hospital.

Approximately 1800-2000 books are given away annually.  For more information or to volunteer, please call:

Friends Author Series

This fundraiser, established in 2011, brings popular authors to Stamford. The Friends partner with Elm Street Books, an independent book store in New Canaan, to sell books at the events. As part of the experience, the Friends feature local restaurants, which donate appetizers for a wine reception beforehand.

To date, this series has attracted top flight authors and the reputation for the program has grown tremendously. With a modest ticket price of $15, it has developed a buzz as a fun night out and a chance to hear exciting authors.

Pub Crawl

The Friends sponsor an annual Literary Pub Crawl, a fun night out at local restaurants with literary-themed entertainment at each stop.
